Dr. Kovnick (please call him Jeff) is Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry.  Jeff approaches each individual with a strong evidence base as well as a deep understanding of adolescent needs and patterns. He believes in recognizing the unique individual behind each face and involving the youth in their treatment. He is as excited to get someone off of medication they may not currently need as he is to find a treatment that ends up providing relief or symptom resolution.

Jeff has a wealth of experience and diverse background. He received an MS in Human Nutrition from Columbia University, and his MD from the Medical College of Wisconsin (formerly Marquette). Jeff completed a residency in Adult Psychiatry and two fellowships (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as well as Forensic Psychiatry).

Post fellowship, Jeff was an Assistant Professor at the University of Utah. His many roles included medical director of adolescent services at the Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute and Director of the Forensic Evaluation and Consultation Service. Jeff has consulted extensively to the State of Utah (Division of Child and Family Services and also Juvenile Justice Service) with youth in custody due to trauma, abuse, neglect, or behavioral issues.

After entering private practice in 1999, Jeff has been the Medical Director and psychiatrist for a group of adolescent Residential Treatment Centers (RTC) in Salt Lake City. As an RTC psychiatrist, Jeff has seen literally thousands of youth who have completed Wilderness treatment.

Jeff has lived and traveled around the world and still thoroughly enjoys exploring and going on adventures. He enjoys whitewater kayaking, biking in the mountains, camping, skiing, and live music.

Jeff is a strong believer in the transformative experiences of Second Nature and is excited to be a part of your family’s journey.
