Fred Works Well

Fred is a Licensed Psychologist with 25 years of experience treating adolescents, young adults, and families. He works with issues of anxiety, self-harm, depression, personality disorders, technology overuse, acting-out behaviors, sexually compulsive behaviors, identity challenges, and family conflict. He has worked extensively with transgender youth and adults, as well as with LGB individuals. Fred often works with students for whom other treatment options and settings have failed, or who have complex psychological presentations.  Adopting a unique conversational and educational style, he works well with adolescents and young adults for whom previous modalities and treatment settings have led to minimal change and growth.

 

Education &
Prior Work Experience

Fred earned his B.A. from Yale University in music and psychology, followed by a M.S. in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Bridgeport. After working in college admissions and counseling, as well as in mental health clinics and hospitals, he went on to earn his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Miami, with a focus in behavioral medicine and adolescent mental health. Fred has since worked as an outdoor treatment therapist and as a psychologist in private practice providing therapy and psychological testing. In addition, he has enjoyed speaking at workshops and conferences

Strengths

Fred works efficiently and effectively with students, parents, and other professionals to clarify the issues of concern, make lasting changes, and promote improved emotional, social, academic, and family functioning. He aims for a balance between useful clinical insight and compassionate care. He is known and appreciated for his insight, ability to establish rapport, and a very direct and honest approach. Combining humor, understanding, healthy skepticism and effective strategies for improving psychological health, young people and families who work with Fred appreciate his clinical acuity and evidence-based approach to therapy.

With a focus on evidence-based treatments, Fred specializes in mindfulness-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (MB-CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). He also has training and experience teaching Motivational Interviewing and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

Interests

Growing up in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, Fred has always enjoyed his time outdoors and the healing power of nature.  He came to live in the USA as a young adolescent and has experienced being immersed in a completely new culture. Fred loves to sing as well as record and tour with his singing groups,  and is an avid snowboarder and a professional snowboard instructor. He enjoys traveling, camping, scuba diving, and cooking during his spare time.
